The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalene

The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalene is the newest addition to my skincare regime and the latest product I’ve been testing out from skincare brand, The Ordinary.  I picked this up back in September when I placed a re-order of their Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution (Vitamin C serum) as I had heard good things about it.  Spoiler alert – I’ve been loving this – keep reading to find out why!

From The Ordinary website:

Squalane is a saturated and stable hydrocarbon that is found naturally in the skin. It has very high emollience, is an exceptional hydrator and can prevent ongoing loss of hydration that impairs dermal suppleness. Squalane is non-comedogenic and is suitable for use on all skin types. It can also be applied to hair to increase heat protection, add shine and reduce breakage potential.

Note: This product uses 100% pure plant-derived Squalane that is ECOCERT approved and is a USDA Certified Bio-based Product.

This oil is contained in a tinted glass bottle with an eye dropper for easy application.

I have been using this oil almost every morning since early September so I feel like I have a pretty solid opinion of it. It’s a very lightweight, thin oil with a bit of a watery consistency.  If I apply too much of this, my skin can definitely feel greasy and oily so I like to stick to a max of 2-3 drops.

Depending on what type of foundation I’m wearing that day (matte vs. powder vs glowy), I either mix a few drops in with my moisturizer or apply a few drops directly to my skin, prior to moisturizer.  I have tried it overtop my moisturizer (which I believe is the recommended method) but I found it left me greasy by the end of the day, which is not a problem I experience when I wear it underneath.

After application, I find the majority of it soaks in immediately.  I usually apply this as the first step in my morning routine and let it soak into my skin while I apply my eye makeup.  This absorbs completely by the time I’m ready to apply my face products which is key.

So far, I’ve noticed that my skin feels slightly plumper, more hydrated and my makeup applies more smoothly – which I love because this has basically replaced any need for a foundation primer in my life!  I haven’t experienced any breakouts as a result of using this which has not always been the case for me (ahem Argan Oil) given my sensitive, acne-prone skin.

Hands down, this is the best facial oil I’ve used.    It hydrates, plumps and smooths skin without leaving my skin greasy or oily.  Prior to this I was using The Ordinary’s Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, and I liked it but was having trouble with it pilling up; this has replaced that product with, in my opinion, even better results and no pilling!

If you’re looking to dip your toe into the facial oils, I think this is a great one to start with – I don’t think you’d be disappointed, no matter your skin type!

Have you tried Squalene Oil?

Yes!!! My favourite product from The Ordinary that I’ve tried so far. Interesting that you use it during the day though. I’ve only ever used it at night because I’m worried it’ll be too greasy with foundation. Might have to try it during the day soon!
