Review: The Ordinary Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%

The Ordinary Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%

This is the final product I have to review from my Ordinary haul from well.ca last month and I’ve saved the best for last: The Ordinary’s Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12% I’ve had great success with the various Vitamin C serums I’ve tried over the last year or so I was interested to see how this would compare, especially given it’s low price tag.

ABOUT THE PRODUCT

From The Ordinary website:

“Vitamin C is an effective antioxidant, brightens the skin tone and reduces signs of aging. In its pure form, Vitamin C is unstable in water. Ascorbyl Glucoside is a water-soluble derivative of Vitamin C. It is much more stable in water but it is less potent than direct L-Ascorbic Acid. Being more compatible with water allows for a very pleasant serum texture. It is considered a gold standard of Vitamin C derivatives due to its high stability and comfortable use, but it’s impossible to achieve extremely high L-Ascorbic Acid potency with this solution. Aside from the general benefits of pure Vitamin C, Ascorbyl Glucoside has been shown to offer specific skin brightening benefits.”

PRICE

$12.90 CAD/USD for 30 mL / 1 fl oz

PACKAGING

This is packaged similarly to the Hylauronic Acid serum with a glass bottle and eye dropper however the glass on this is tinted, which is to protect it from sunlight and UV rays.

INGREDIENTS

Aqua (Water), Ascorbyl Glucoside, Propanediol, Aminomethyl Propanol, Triethanolamine, Isoceteth-20, Xanthan gum, Dimethyl Isosorbide, Ethoxydiglycol, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol.

PERFORMANCE

With previous Vitamin C serums I have used I started seeing results within a week or two – my skin was brighter, more evenly-toned, there was less texture and any acne scars began to fade. I’m happy to report that I’ve experienced the exact same results with this serum! As an added bonus, I’ve also seen a clearer skin as well – I only tend to breakout now when I’ve indulged in some dairy and those breakouts are a lot less severe and they disappear quicker. So I have zero complaints with the effectiveness of this serum – it works and it works just as well as more expensive products I’ve used such as the Ole Henriksen Truth Serum.

What is different is the texture of this. It’s thin and feels slightly watery (which I think is kind of standard for Vitamin C serums) but once I apply it to and and rub it into my skin it feels super tacky and stays that way for a while. I had a similar experience with the Hylauronic Acid serum (although I do find this absorbs quicker) and perhaps it’s just a common characteristic of The Ordinary’s products. While I don’t find this a dealbreaker it can be an annoyance waiting for this to absorb enough to move on the next step of my skincare routine (i.e. moisturizer); if I don’t let this absorb long enough my moisturizer will pill up on my skin and that’s just annoying. Just something to note if you are considering this.

VERDICT

Out of the three products that I tried from The Ordinary this is by far my favourite – mainly because I saw the most results with this. I can’t get over the price point of this – I love that they’ve made quality skincare accessible to almost everyone; it’s refreshing! I’ve made my way through 3/4 of this bottle so I will be placing another order really soon for a replacement – I don’t want to be without this.

If you are currently using a Vitamin C serum in your skincare routine I can’t recommend giving this one a try enough – I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

This one is next on my list to try! I’m currently using The Ordinary’s Vitamin C Suspension and it gives good results, but I hate the grittiness. Thanks for the review, it was super helpful!
