It’s been a while since I’ve done an Emtpies post so I have lots of them to share; to make it easier to read, I’ve split this into 2 parts. This first post will include Haircare, Makeup and Repeat products!
I received this shampoo as PR two years ago (which is crazy!) and I just finished it up – I’m still working on the conditioner (as per usual). You can read my full review on the line here – overall it’s a decent shampoo but after using it for that long I can’t say I’m in love with it enough to purchase it again.
John Frieda Luxurious Volume Shampoo*
I also received this shampoo as PR last year; I did enjoy this shampoo although I didn’t find it added much volume to my hair – it just cleaned it well. It’s one that I’d consider buying on my own but I currently have 5 bottles of shampoo on rotation in my shower so I don’t expect to need any anytime soon – plus I like to switch up my products a lot.
I’ve had this in my hair products collection for some time but I only started using it regularly over the last 6 months and I’ve seen such a difference in my hair since doing so! I colour-treat my hair, use heat styling and it’s fine so it’s very sceptical to damage; this acts as an excellent heat protectant and leave-in conditioner. I’ve discovered the way this works best for me is to spray around 4 pumps into my hands and work it through my hair rather than spray it in directly. It’s also much easier to keep away from my roots that way. My hair has been so much healthier since I started using it and I can’t wait to pick this up again once I finish up the leave-in conditioner that I’m currently using (which is nowhere near as good).
This foil pack sample lasted me two washes; it worked well, my hair seemed to have a bit more volume than usual and my hair felt clean. Again, it didn’t do anything mind-blowing so I don’t intend on purchasing the full-size, even though the price point seems quite reasonable for a salon product.
I purchased this mousse shortly after I received the shampoo/conditioner as PR; I am a mousse-user and was curious to see how this performed. Overall, it wasn’t bad but it didn’t hold my curls in nor give me as volume as my beloved Marc Anthony Strictly Curls mousse!
Do you ever buy something once, really like it and then you buy it again and it’s not as good as you remembered it to be? That’s what happened with this; the first can of this I went through I loved – it smelled amazing and was a light spray with high hold. The second can still smelled good but it didnt’ seem to hold my hair as well and actually weighed it down. Disappointing – I won’t be taking a risk on a third can.
I keep getting travel sized versions of these, using them up and loving them yet I never splurge for a full size. I love this stuff for one reason – my curls always last much longer in my hair when I use this. I should have picked this up at the recent Sephora sale.
I received this sample size in a Sephora Favourites kit I picked up late last year; after using it a few times I immediately fell in love with it. My favourite way to use this is on second and third day curled hair – my hair tends to fall pretty flat on those days and this brings some life back into it. It also defines whats left of my curls a bit more and it makes my hair smell really yummy (if you can’t tell by now, I’m a fan of coconut-scented things!). I picked up the full-size of this at the Sephora sale and I’m happy to have it back in my life!
I found this at Ulta last Summer and thought it was a genius invention, specifically for its slim, compact packaging. Sadly, the dry shampoo did not agree with me – it made my scalp super itchy. I wish more travel-sized dry shampoo was packaged this way though – it takes up such little space in your liquids bag yet I easily got more than a long weekend’s worth of dry shampoo out of this!
I really liked this mascara – it’s very lengthening and gave my lashes a fluttery look that I thought was pretty. My only complaint is that it’s very difficult to remove; I use my cleanser and then a micellar water and I’m usually still left with some of it leftover after that.
This is probably one of my favourite thickening mascaras; if you like really full, thick lashes this is a good one to try. It can get clumpy pretty quick but I find that’s what gives me the thickness I want; what does bug me is how much it flakes and smudges. That said, I still repurchase this from time to time so it obviously doesn’t bother me that much.
How many versions of the Volumunious mascara are there? I swear everytime I go to the drugstore they’ve launched another one. I don’t know how long this has been around but I just found it okay. It was good for length and definition but it didn’t leave me with much in terms of volume and it smudged quite a bit on me.
I don’t really have a lot of luck with CoverGirl mascaras; the only one I’ve liked was the Supersizer. This one really hasn’t been successful in changing my mind unfortunately. I found this gave me those spiky, spidery lashes that I absolutely hate. In addition, this flaked but even if it didn’t, I wouldn’t have been a fan of it anyway.
So many people rave about Essence mascaras but I have never gotten them to work for me – all of them flake and smudge like crazy. This one was really clumpy on top of that, and not in a good way. It would clump all my lashes together to the point where I had a unilash on each eye.
This was a big disappointment; read more details about it in my review here.
I’ve picked up a few samples of this mascara over the years and always liked it as a base for other mascaras. It’s ridiculously lengthening but this last tube was a little off – it didn’t seem to lengthen as well as it had in the past nor work well with any of the mascaras I was using at the time. I never had an intention of buying the full size of this but I also don’t think I would utilize my points for a sample of this going forward now.
This serum can also be used as a primer and I like it – I definitely notice a difference in the size of my pores when I use this. I don’t know if I’d pay the $25 for it, I picked this up on clearance at Shoppers a while back and it doesn’t appear to be available in Canada anyway. I do have another tube of this to use up but once that’s gone, that’ll be it.
I love this concealer but I hate the fact that it’s not available in Canada; it’s super high coverage and a little goes a long way; this tube lasted me a year. I would love to try to find a dupe for this but I’m not sure it exists – if you know of one please let me know below!
This concealer wasn’t bad; I personally like high-coverage concealers and I’d say this is more of medium-coverage. I didn’t like it for under my eyes but for blemishes it seemed to work well.
I have a love/hate relationship with this eyeliner; it works best after its dried out a bit. Freshly opened it can tend to feather and bleed a bit so I have to apply it pretty carefully. It literally lasts forever though; one of these lasted me an entire year of pretty regular use!
I think this actually belongs down in my repeats section as I’ve gone through a few of these; I like this for travel as it’s a quick way to fill in and set my brows in place plus, it’s super cheap – under $5 CAD!
This is a pretty good clear brow gel; it sets my brows well and this tube lasted me forever. My only complaint is that the brush is a little large for my liking so I probably wouldn’t repurchase it because of that.
This is one of my favourite lip products; it’s easy to apply, comfortable to wear and is lightweight in my purse. I’ve been so tempted to purchase another one of these on several occasions but I’m really trying to focus on using the products I have in my collection first. At some point I’ll likely stop fighting the urge because I miss not having this around.
Bite Beauty Lip Gloss (Cocoa)
This lip gloss is quite old and even though it looks like there’s still lots left of it, there’s nothing left to scrape out of the tube. They don’t appear to make these glosses anymore which is unfortunate – their formula was very comfortable, not sticky and pigmented.
I always pick up some of these lip balms when we’re in Hawaii – they’re really nice and they smell amazing!
This my second one of these curlers and it’s going to be my last. It’s spring-loaded so it’s very gentle and I don’t pinch my eyelids with this like I tend to do with regular curlers, however that spring has broken twice within a year of use. The first time I thought it was just a fluke but not the second time.
My favourite winter-time bubble bath!
When the OGX body wash isn’t on sale, I pick this one up. It’s cheap, smells amazing and leaves my skin feeling soft and moisturized.
