It’s time again to round-up my top beauty products of the year! I chose 17 products in my collection that stood out to me in 2017 (if you hadn’t guessed the 17 is intentional) . I’ve been doing my yearly favourites this way for a couple of years now and it’s always worked out – I’ve never felt that there were products that I had to leave out because there weren’t enough spots or vice versa. Once that happens, I’ll stop doing it this way but until then, this is my preferred method of choice. With that said, let’s see what topped my list in 2017!
I’ve mentioned this foundation a couple of times and I’m overdue with a review for it (it’s coming!); even though I didn’t start using it until later in the year (November to be exact), it was a standout product for me, for so many reasons. I love how it applies, the finish, it’s lasting powder, coverage – the list goes on and on. Note that I have combo skin that leans more on the dry side but I honestly think this would work for almost any skin type. Totally recommend getting a sample of this at Sephora if you can – I don’t think you’d recommend it!
I picked up a few eyeshadow palettes last year but this was by-far the standout. Again, I have mentioned my love for it quite a few times – it’s such a beautiful palette! I don’t even like warm-toned shadows but I’m completely infatuated with it, it’s super versatile and the formulas are top-notch.
As a lip gloss lover, I’m quite picky about what I like in a lip gloss and this one checks almost all the boxes. I’ve got a full review on it here if you’d like to learn more about what I love this stuff!
This is a product that I changed my mind about; initially I wasn’t crazy about it but the more I used it, the more I realized how good it was. It’s a brush tip pen which is what I prefer, it’s super black and it really is easy to use. The best part – one pen lasted me an entire year of regular use!
You can file lip balms in tins under things that I’m not really a fan of – I find them a pain in the butt to use, in addition to being unsanitary, and I’ve never found one that actually works well. Then I tried this one and it changed my mind. This is a fantastic lip balm! First of all it smells good enough to eat, which is a very important lip balm requirement. The balm itself is thick and luxurious but not sticky; I’ve been using nightly for quite a while now and my lips have been loving it – they’re a lot less flaky and dry which for me, is huge!
Despite being called a bronzer, this was my most-used highlighter of 2017. I’m not sure who it would work for as an actual bronzer as it doesn’t really have any bronze colour to it (much more of a champagne sheen) but as a highlight it’s gorgeous – it leaves me with a natural looking glow that is easily buildable if I so desire.
My biggest struggle with cleansers is finding one that doesn’t leave my skin feeling dry and tight after using it so I was super happy to discover this one from Neutrogena last year. I’ve liked everything I’ve tried from their Hydro Boost line and if you want something that actually cleanses your skin while leaving it feeling soft and smooth afterwards, you might want to give this one a try.
My skin is far from perfect so a good spot treatment is imperative to my skincare routine; I’ve tried many over the years but this is the best I’ve tried. It contains 5.0% glycolic acid and 2.0% salicylic acid so it’s strong stuff! If I apply this over an active breakout it helps heal it quicker but I also apply it every night as the first step in my skincare regime to help prevent future breakouts. It has a thick consistency so a little goes a long way – one bottle lasted me 6 months of regular use.
I’ve known for a while that my skin loves glycolic acid but for whatever reason, I took a break from it for a year or so and I noticed a huge change in my skin. My breakouts were worse, my skin looked dull and was dry and flaky. I re-introduced it to my skin last year in the form of this Neostrata lotion and I immediately saw results – my skin was much happier. I experienced less severe breakouts and scars from previous breakouts faded much quicker. My skin was also a lot smoother with less texture. Note I apply this every other night overtop of my moisturizer – given my dry skin I find it works best for me that way.
Am I the only one that has struggled to find a moisturizer that properly moisturizes my skin, doesn’t leave me looking and feeling greasy by the end of the day and makes my makeup apply nicely? Before this I thought that was a lot to ask and I could only have one or two of those things. Now I realize I can have it all! 😉 But honestly, this couldn’t be more perfect because it literally does everything that I need it to do – I only wish it came in tube rather than a jar.
In 2017 I made taking better care of my skin a priority and that included doing some kind of treatment or mask every morning. I have a large collection of face masks and I pick a different one each day; this mask is fairly new to my collection (I picked it up as part of a skincare set from Sephora in November) but after using it for the first time, I was hooked. It contains ingredients I was familiar with (White Willow Bark, AHA’s & BHA’s) with ones I’ve never heard of before (Blue Tansy Oil) and claims to exfoliate and soothe skin while also unclogging pores. My skin feels smooth and calm after using it and even though it’s not included in the claims, I also find it feels firmer too.
This is easily one of the best products I’ve tried in 2017! When my skin is excessively dry, tight, and/or flaky I reach for one of these, apply it overnight and my skin is noticeably more plump, calm and moisturized the next morning. They are such an affordable option and I always have one on hand for skin emergencies. I’ve also tried the Avocado Sheet mask and it’s equally as fantastic!
Consider me obsessed with this (and the body wash below) – it is the best! It’s moisturizing without being sticky, absorbs quickly and smells delicious. If you read any of my empties posts you’ll know that I went through quite a few of these last year!
I’m currently out of this at the moment, so please excuse its absence from pictures. But rest assured, like the lotion above, I can’t get enough of this. I use it mainly as a bubble bath and it works really well for that purpose (foams up nicely, bubbles are long-lasting and smells great) but it also works well as it’s intended purpose as a body wash. If you like a good coconut-vanilla scent and are looking for a body wash that won’t strip your skin, I can’t recommend this enough.
Prior to last year the last thing I ever thought I’d be mentioning in a yearly favourites post would be a natural deodorant yet here we are. The reason being is I’m a huge sweater, especially in hot weather and previous “natural” deodorants in the past had done me wrong. One day I noticed that my extra-strength Mitchum antiperspirant didn’t really seem to be working anymore – yes it was keeping me odour-free but it wasn’t actually preventing me from perspiring like it should have been. That was the only reason I was using it in the first place so I decided to make the switch to something aluminium-free. I tried a few with some disastrous results (including irritated underarms) before I landed on and stuck with this one. It actually works, doesn’t irritate my skin, and I don’t have to worry about any kind of residue or stains on my shirts after applying it. You need to try it if you’re looking for an aluminum-free deodorant.
I received this foot file as part of a PR package from Mont Bleu last year (review here) and I loved it so much I actually went and purchased one as a gift for my Mom for Christmas (Sidenote: I ordered it from Amazon and it was a fantastic experience – it arrived quickly, was packaged with immense care and they sent a follow-up email afterwards . They had no idea I was a blogger who they had sent product to previously – that’s just the level of customer service they provide everyone!). My feet have never been in better shape since I started using this! Glass foot files blow all other foot files out of the water – they are super effective but also gentle on your feet. On top of that, these are handmade in the Czech Republic and come with a lifetime guarantee. I can’t recommend this enough!
Purple shampoos are a new edition to my haircare routine, despite the fact that I’ve been colouring my hair blonde for years. I didn’t realize what a difference they could make until I started using them; while I currently have two in my rotation (the other being the Blonde Sexy hair line) and loving them both, this one stood out to me because I liked the fact that it caters to cool blondes. I also really enjoy the hair mask which given my fine hair, is not a common thing – this nourishes and detangles my hair but doesn’t leave it feeling weighed down, heavy or greasy.
