Lorac Alter Ego Lip Gloss Trio

Lip glosses are my go-to lip product, no matter the season.  They’re what I reach for because I find them comfortable and easy to wear; despite trying several matte/liquid lipsticks, the drawbacks (dryness, emphasis of fine lines, etc.) always outweighed the few positives for me.

Last year I received a small sample of a Lorac Alter Ego Lip Gloss and I immediately fell in love; when I visited Ulta last month and saw the Alter Ego Lip Gloss Trio, I couldn’t resist picking it up.

PRICE & COMPARABLES

This set retails for $27 USD and includes 3, 0.13 oz full-sized Lorac Ulta Ego Lip Glosses. Individually these retail for $17.00 USD each, which values this set at $51 USD.

In comparison:

  • Buxom Full-On Lip Creams/Polishes – $24 CAD / $20 USD for 0.15 oz / 4.44 mL
  • BareMinerals Moxie Plumping Lip Gloss – $23 CAD / $18 USD for 0.15 oz  / 4.44 mL
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Gloss – $21 CAD / $16 USD for 0.16 oz / 4.73 mL

PACKAGING

Each gloss is housed in a clear acrylic tube with a plastic gunmetal-look cap.  Even though it’s pretty standard as far as lip gloss packaging goes I do like the design; it’s sleek and not too bulky which makes it easy to slip into my purse.

Inside you’ll find a wand with a slightly slanted doe foot applicator with a flat bottom; I do find the applicator tends to hold a lot of product which I think contributes to an issue I mention below, so it’s not my favourite design.

SCENT

Lorac’s formula has a light vanilla cake scent that wears away pretty quickly after being applied; I find the scent pleasant and not at all overpowering.

INGREDIENTS

Polybutene, Tridecyl Trimellitate, Octyldodecanol, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacladipate-2, Silica Dimethyl Silylate, Ozokerite, Diisostearyl Malate, Ethyl Vanillin, Phenoxyethanol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Euterpe Oleracea Fruit Extract, Punica Granatum Extract, Retinyl Palmitate, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Olus Oil, Arachis Hypogaea (Peanut) Oil, Tin Oxide, Tocopherol. May Contain: Mica (CI 77019), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Red 6 (CI 15850), Red 7 Lake (CI 15850), Red 28 Lake (CI 45410), Blue 1 Lake (CI 42090), Yellow 5 Lake (CI 19140), Manganese Violet (CI 77742).

Note that these have peanut oil in them – that seems like bit of a strange ingredient to add to a lip product and I have no idea if that could cause a reaction in someone with a peanut allergy but I thought it was worthwhile to point out!

SWATCHES & SHADES

  • Goddess: Purple-mauve; the most pigmented of the bunch and my favourite, it’s such a great shade for Fall (or anytime really!)
  • Southern Belle: Light peach; this is the least pigmented and probably my least favourite; I have to apply quite a few layers to get a slight peach tint to my lips; as such, I prefer to use this on top of other lip products to tone it down or add a glossy finish.
  • Socialite: Nude; I wasn’t sure how this was going to work for me as nude shades can often make me look dead; this one actually works really well with my skintone, I think because it’s got a touch of warmth to it.  It looks great on it’s on or overtop of other lip products.

FORMULA & PERFORMANCE

The reason I like these glosses is so much is largely due in point to their formula – it’s probably one of the most comfortable, non-sticky glosses I’ve ever used.  One of my other favourite glosses is Buxom’s Full-On Lip Creams and while I love those, I do find these less sticky, but equally as smooth, glossy and shiny.

Pigmentation is overall good; being the darkest shade, Goddess obviously has the most pigmentation but Socialite surprised me with how much it had as well, especially given that it’s a nude.  Southern Belle was slightly disappointing to me – in the tube it looks like more of a vibrant peach but in real life it comes across as more of a nude with a hint of peach, and it takes quite a few coats to get there.

I do find the formula a bit thick however, which means in order to ensure an even application, I always wipe the applicator off beforehand.  Otherwise I end up with a really thick layer that looks patchy and gloopy.  Same goes for applying more than one layer – apply it in thin layers for the best results.

It’s important to note that these are indeed a gloss – meaning if you eat or drink something, it’s going to come off pretty much immediately and you’re going to have to reapply it.  If you’re looking for a long-lasting lip product, these aren’t going to be for you.

Lastly, I appreciate the fact that these don’t dry out my lips; make no mistake – gloss does not necessarily equal moisture!  I’ve tried several lip glosses that have irritated my lips and made them crack and flake but thankfully, this isn’t one of them.

VERDICT

Another Lorac product for the win!  I’m super impressed with these and won’t hesitate to add more to my collection (even though that’s the last thing I need!).  I think this set is a really good value and fantastic way to test these glosses out!

In terms of the glosses themselves, I’d slot them in the number 2 spot in my list of favourite lip glosses, with Buxom’s Full-On Lip Creams & Polishes taking the number one spot.  I’m docking these a mark because they are slightly more tricky to apply when compared to Buxom’s.  That said, if you’re not a fan of the Buxom glosses (which can sometimes be a little sticky), I’d totally recommend these to you.

I love a good lip gloss that smells like Vanilla cake. I used to buy Buxom lip glosses a lot. But now I’m considering trying Lorac. I like a less sticky gloss, so this may be worth a go!

I’d wear all 3 of these colours! I’ve not tried any Lorac lip products – but I’m not surprised that they’re good. I’m really enjoying the Buxom glasses that I’ve tried so far – not sticky at all and wears off really evenly.
