It’s time again to sort through my trash!  This time I feel like I’ve got a bunch of different items to chat about – not just the same old, same old!

MAKEUP

Too Faced Hangover Primer

This is one of my favourite primers I’ve ever used.  It smells awesome (like coconuts) and leaves behind a nice moisturized and smooth base for applying foundation.  I don’t find it does anything to extend the life of my makeup, but I really like it for the winter months when my skin can really use an extra surge of hydration.

Repurchase?: Yes, in the Fall/Winter months.

Maybelline fitme concealer

This concealer took me a while to use up – there’s a lot of product in that tube!  Some days I liked this, some days I didn’t.  I liked the way it looked on my skin but sometimes I found it settled into fine lines and didn’t cover as much as I would like.  I’m currently using Maybelline’s Better Skin concealer and I like it better so I don’t see myself repurchasing this.

Repurchase?: No

e.l.f  Shadow Lock Eye Primer

Is it possible that my eyelids are becoming oilier the older I get?  Because it seems that way.  I used to really like this  eyelid primer but it doesn’t seem to work as well as it used to (maybe they changed the formula)?  I’m seeing creasing and fading about halfway through the day when using this which is disappointing because for $1 this is such a steal!  I think if you don’t have super oily lids like me, you should definitely give this a try.  I actually have another one of these in my stash so I’ll be using that up and seeing how it performs, but if it performs the same, I probably won’t repurchase.

Repurchase?: TBD

Physicians Formula 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner & Serum

So many rave about this drugstore liquid liner so I had to give it a try myself.  I’ve heard it being compared to Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner and I’d have to disagree; the only thing they have in common is that they are both brush tips.  The PF liner has a much more liquidy formula, which some may like but I don’t.  I find it feathers and wears away in my inner corner within a few hours of wear although it does glide on smoothly.  In addition, the PF is a satin finish while the KVD is matte, which I prefer.  While it didn’t work for me, I think it’s worth a try if you’re skilled with liquid liner and don’t mind a non-matte finish.

Repurchase?: No

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner

I pretty much covered why I love this above – it’s matte and literally lasts all day long. It’s also brush tip which is a necessity for me – I damage felt tip pens within one use.  The formula is perfect – not too liquidy but enough so that it applies smoothly and easily.  I wasted a lot of money trying various liners before I determined that I should just stick with what works for me – and this is it.

Repurchase?: Already have!

Buxom Full-On Lip Cream (Kir Royale)

I love lip glosses and Buxom makes some of my favourites; I love both the lip creams (no shimmer) and the lip polishes (shimmery).  They’re comfortable to wear, easy to apply and smell like vanilla cupcakes.  They also leave behind a tingly feeling that plumps your lips ever so slightly which is an added bonus.  I received this gloss as part of a holiday set and I’ve used this shade before – it’s a burgundy hue.  It’s pretty but there are other shades I like better so I probably wouldn’t pick this up on its own.  That said, I’ve got another one in my stash to use up and I’m not mad about it.

Repurchase?: Not this shade

Saje Tingle Lips Lip Balm

I received this for Christmas, along with some other Saje goodies.  I really like Saje products but I’ve never tried their lip balms.  I was impressed with this one – it was very hydrating and smoothing.  While I love my LipSmackers, I also like having a clear balm around to wear underneath lip products and/or to wear to bed so this fits the bill well.  This leaves a light tingly sensation behind so if you’re not into that you might want to check out their other flavours.  I’m currently using their Coconut version and I’m loving that too!

Repurchase?: Yes

MASCARA

Little note about mascaras here – I have very sensitive eyes.  They’re often itchy so I find it I rub them quite a bit throughout the day to the point where it’s just second nature and I don’t even realize I’m doing it.  In addition, my eyes tear up a lot – anything from the slightest breeze or yawning makes them water.  So I really struggle with finding mascaras that don’t rub off, flake, smudge and transfer on me which is why I try so many.  Just something to keep in mind as you’re reading my reviews!

Essence get big! Lashes Volume Boost mascara

I’m slowly making my way through Essence’s massive mascara line.  I didn’t mind this one – it defined my lashes nicely and had minimal clumping, flaking and smudging.  It added decent length but wasn’t one I’d recommend for volume or thickness (which is what I’d like).  So overall l it was good but not good enough for me to want to try again.

Repurchase?: No

Essence The False Lashes mascara – Dramatic Volume Unlimited

This truly delivers on its claims of Dramatic Volume – I absolutely loved how thick and voluminous this mascara made my lashes !  However it came at a price – so much flaking and smudging!  It reminded me a lot of the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara.  It did clump quite a bit too but it’s nothing that I couldn’t fix with an eyelash comb.  That said, I think it’s worth at try – Essence mascaras are so cheap (around $5 CAD).

Tarte Lights Camera Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara

I kind of have a love/hate relationship with this mascara – sometimes I get a tube of it and I love it – it separates, lightly thickens, defines.  Other times I try it and it clumps, flakes and dries out after two uses.  It’s weird how inconsistent it can be and for that reason I can’t recommend it.

Repurchase?: No

Benefit They’re Real Lengthening Mascara

I’m going to be blunt – I hate this mascara.  It makes my lashes look thin and spidery and that’s the complete opposite of what I’m going for.  On the bright side it does lengthen them and it doesn’t flake or transfer on me but I’d honestly rather wear no mascara than wear this one.  This was a sample so if I get any further samples of it I’ll be passing it on for sure.

Repurchase? : No

Benefit They’re Real Tinted Primer

I was really hopeful that this lash primer could help me with my smudging/flaking problem but it did nothing – absolutely nothing.  I paired it with the They’re Real mascara above – nothing.  I paired it with other mascaras – still nothing.  I used it a handful of times and then just gave up on it and into my empties basket it went.  Pretty useless in my opinion – don’t waste your money.

Repurchase?: NO

Clinique High Impact Mascara

Another mascara that gives you a more natural look.  It offers defines, separates and lengthens a bit but I definitely wouldn’t refer to it as “high impact”.    Not quite as black as I would like it to be either.  I’ve tried this one a few times and always had the same results.

Repurchase? No

SKINCARE

Vichy Normaderm Purifying Pore-Tightening Lotion

I received this toner from ChickAdvisor for review purposes last summer; my opinion of this hasn’t changed from my initial thoughts on it – I think it’s a great product.  That said, I haven’t repurchased it.  I’ve been using a micellar water in its place and I feel like that’s working for me right now.  That’s not say I won’t repurchase it at some point – I still recommend it.

Repurchase?: Yes

Freeman Charcoal & Black Sugar Polishing Mask

This is one of the best facial scrubs I’ve tried, and the best part is, it’s only $5!  I use this multiple times a week to exfoliate my face and I love the results.  It leaves my skin soft and smooth and it buffs away any dry patches or flaky skin.  The granules aren’t large or rough which would be a disaster with my sensitive skin nor are they too fine/small that they’re ineffective – they’re just perfect.  Lastly, this is gentle enough that I don’t experience any breakouts or redness after using it.  My only gripe with this is the cap – it doesn’t want to close after cracking it open for the first time.  Thankfully the product doesn’t seem to leak as a result which is surprising.

Repurchase?: Yes

Juice Beauty Green Apple Age Defy Moisturizer

I received a deluxe sample of this moisturizer with a Sephora order; at first I wasn’t really a fan of it.  The scent turned me off – it smells like some kind of floral honey but not in a good way.  I tried using it as my daytime moisturizer but it was just too thick and it interfered with applying my foundation.  The tube also irritated me a bit – while it seemed generous there was a lot of air in it so I think it was only half full.  After using this for a month it grew on me – a little bit of this went a long way which I appreciated – it meant I got to test it out over a longer period of time.  I switched to using it as my night-time moisturizer and when I woke up in the morning I really liked how my skin felt and looked – extremely hydrated and luminous.  I was a little sad when I finished it up.  While I haven’t repurchased this, it’s on my list of moisturizers that I would and that list isn’t very long.

Repurchase?: Yes

Muji Cleansing Sheet

These little makeup remover wipes were so awesome!  I won these last year as part of StashMatters giveaway and I finally got around to using them.  The cloths themselves reminded me of a really soft gauze which was awesome for getting every stitch of makeup off of your face.  In addition they were very saturated which is so important in a makeup wipe but hard to find.  I would totally purchase these if I had access to Muji products here!

Repurchase?: Yes

Life Skin Firming Peel Off Mask (Honey & Caramel)

Is it hard to believe that I’ve never tried a peel-off mask before this one?  I totally feel like I’ve been missing out – although the only thing I really liked about this one was peeling it off.  While this smelled good, I didn’t ever notice doing any of the firming it claimed and it was pretty sticky.  I know there has to be some good peel-off masks out there so if you have any suggestions, please leave them below!

Repurchase?: No

For reference, I did a full review on these products that were a part of Belif’s Skincare Travel Kit.

Belief Hungarian Water Essence

I really enjoyed this serum, especially paired with the Aqua Bomb cream below.  It was super lightweight but I think I’d like to try out some more serums to see how they compare, especially given that this one is up there in price ($51 CAD).

Repurchase?: Maybe

Belif Bergamont Herbal Extract Toner

I liked this but I didn’t feel it did anything amazing for my skin; if I was going to repurchase a toner, I’d go with the Vichy one above.

Repurchase?: No

Belif The True Cream – Aqua Bomb

Totally loved this gel-like cream – my skin just drank it right up.  I was actually going to purchase the full-size but then I came across a dupe from Neutrogena.  I’m still testing that one but I could still see myself repurchasing this because I was really happy with the results I saw with it.

Repurchase?: Yes

RANDOM

Jelly Pong Pong Lychee Bath & Shower Gel

I think this is probably the most expensive shower gel I’ve ever used – and maybe will ever use.  $15 for 30 mL? I wasn’t stupid enough to buy this – I received this as part of a Luxe Box last year.  It worked fine and it smelled okay (and I hate lychees) but there is no way it is worth that price.  Good thing Jelly Pong Pong is fun to say.

Repurchase?: No

The Body Shop Almond Nail & Cuticle Oil

The only thing I liked about this nail/cuticle oil was it’s packaging – it’s in a pen form and you had to turn the bottom to click the oil up into the brush.  It makes it easy to apply, it never leaked and it was great for travel.  The oil itself didn’t really do much to condition my nails and cuticles – after it soaked in they looked the same.  I have another one that I’m working on but once that’s gone I won’t repurchase another one of these.

Repurchase?: No

HAIRCARE

Living Proof Flex Shaping Hairspray

I hate that I loved this hairspray; it came in one of those sets that Sephora sells on Black Friday for $15 so it was just a travel-sized can but I wish it was larger.  It provided great hold but it didn’t leave my hair crunchy or sticky.  I don’t mind splurging on shampoo or conditioner but the $33 CAD price tag for a can of hairspray kind of hurts.  I might treat myself to a can at the Sephora sale at the end of the year but we’ll see.

Repurchase?: Yes

TRESemme TRES TWO Extra Hold Hairspray

I’ve used this hairspray before and sometimes I love it and sometimes I hate it; I had a few uses left of this so I decided to finish it up and decided at that time that I liked it.  It tends to keep my style in place as long as it’s a normal weather day – no humidity, no snow/rain, no wind.  I have to reach for something a little heavier in those instances.

Repurchase?: Yes

SG Shaping Hair Spray

I’m not sure if you can get this brand here in Canada – I picked this up in the States when I ran out of hairspray.  This one is pretty intense – one that I’d reach for on a poor weather day.  It can leave my hair feeling a little sticky though but it’s a small price to pay not to have my hair fall flat after spending an hour on it.

Repurchase?: Yes

kms california Hair Stay Anti-Humidity Seal

This is old and just needed to be used up.  My hair is fine so if there’s even a hint of humidity in the air it likes to go limp and fall flat – which is super annoying.  I found this did the job if I wasn’t out in the humidity for too long – like less than 30 minutes.  I also had to layer it in between hairspray.  Too high maintenance for me!

Repurchase?: No

REPEATS

Batiste Dry Shampoo x 3

Obviously I love Batiste but I absolutely hated this new Sweetie scent!  The best way I could describe it is car air freshener x dryer sheet – I couldn’t wait to finish up the can!

Repurchase?: Of course!

Mitchim Unscented Gel Anti-Perspirant & Deodorant

The only anti-perspirant that works for me!  And one of the few that makes an unscented version – I hate scented deodorants!

Repurchase?: Yes

Cake Supremely Rich Bath & Shower Froth (Milk Made)

This is my absolute favourite Cake scent – it smells like raspberries and sweet cream.

Repurchase?: Yes – if only my Winners/HomeSense would start stocking these again!

Delectable Ultra Nourishing Hand Cream (Sweet Mint & Cream)

My favourite hand cream in a different scent – this scent grew on me – I didn’t like it at first.  I never buy mint flavoured anything but the sweet kick to this made it enjoyable.

Repurchase?: Yes

Vichy Normaderm Corrective Anti-Acne Treatment

I’ve been using this as my daily moisturizer and I really do love it.  However, lately it’s starting to pill on me and reacting with my foundations and primers.  I switched it to my night-time moisturizer and it’s doing the same thing.  I’m not sure what’s changed but I’ve decided to take a break from it and try something new – although I must admit I’m disappointed because I really like this stuff (but the pilling is just plain annoying!)

Repurchase?: Not right now

L’Occitane Almond Shower Oil

Still love this stuff – I’m almost done another one of these!

Repurchase?: Yes

I’m off to dump all of this into the trash/recycling now.  Thanks for reading!

  1. Ooh I need to try the Essence mascaras! I keep forgetting. But I do have a big backlog to get through.

What is it with BeneFit? I have never really liked anything of theirs, and so pricy, to boot.

I got that Jelly Pong Pong shower gel, too! Mine literally smelled like almost nothing, and I love lychee. What a waste of time that product was, and so expensive. LMAO.

I’m so glad you like the Juice moisturizer. I got the same one from Sephora and have yet to try it.

The Belif stuff sounds really good. So much stuff I wanna try 😀

Loved this roundup! So many cool items!!

    1. Yes my list of Benefit products that I like is pretty short – I think they rely heavily on their cute packaging.

Totally recommend Belif skincare, I was pretty impressed with almost everything in that set. I just wish it were a little more friendly on the wallet!

Hopefully you enjoy that Juice Beauty moisturizer too!

  2. Whoa, you finished so much stuff!! Was this all in one month? I feel like I can’t even finish this much in a year. You have a lot of stuff in here that has peaked my interest!

Ooh I want to try that Essence false lash mascara now! Sounds like you haven’t been having much luck with mascaras lately – me neither.

I’m dying to try Living Proof. I buy their stuff for a friend for Christmas every year because I know she likes it, but haven’t tried it myself. What a travesty! I have a hard time spending a lot of money on hair products for some reason.

That Cake shower froth sounds amazing. Raspberries and cream? Yes please.

You don’t like lychee? Lol my fiance would be appalled, every time we go somewhere that has lychee flavored something, he has to get it ?

    1. I guess my title was a bit deceiving – these are the empties I’ve accumulated from last empties post which was in February I believe? 😉

I’m actually trying out 2 drugstore mascaras right now and I’m loving them – Maybelline’s Lash Sensation and L’Oreal’s Extra Volume Collagen – not sure what you like in a mascara but I think they’re both worth a try!

I’ve tried a few things from Living Proof and so far I like that hairspray and their hair primer. I was not a fan of their dry shampoo.

Yes if you ever see the Cake shower froth in Milk Made scoop it up – it smells so good!

I don’t like Lychee because they look like eyeballs to me. lol The flavour is fine but I just can’t get past the way they look.

  3. Aw too bad you didn’t care for the PF eyeliner pen. I love it because it comes in BROWN and it stays put on me. I never much cared whether a liner is matte or shiny… I mostly always wear shimmery eye shadows so it doesn’t matter.

The only issue I have with the Buxom lip products is when they tingle and it’s WINTER TIME! 😛 And that’s also why I’ve passed on the Saje lip balms…

Tsk tsk, you shouldn’t rub your eyes! Maybe time to see an optometrist? I went a month ago due to my eyes feeling irritated / fatigued a lot – and was diagnosed with moderate dry eyes. Allergy season has also been especially bad this year – double whammy!
You got me curious about the Essence Dramatic Volume Unlimited. I’ve heard good things about it.

I haven’t used a Freeman mask in ages! I used to like their pineapple enzyme one. I’ll have to keep an eye out for this one.

Funny, I have a pack of those MUJI cleansing sheets and I haven’t cracked them open yet. I shall have to give them a whirl! I hope MUJI expands to more Canadian cities – I saw they’re opening up in Vancouver next. 🙂

I’m curious to smell that Batiste Sweetie scent – the packaging is adorable.

Hmm just seeing the Milk Made bottle evoked that smell in my brain – LOVE IT.

Well done on all the empties! <3

    1. Saje makes a coconut flavoured balm that doesn’t tingle and it’s really good – I’d recommend it!

That’s interesting about the dry eye thing – I always just assumed my eyes were extra sensitive. Something to talk to my optometrist about for sure.

I wish Muji would open a store here – lots of retailers seem to be avoiding Alberta right now given our economy. If anything we’re seeing them close rather than expand out here. 🙁
