Beauty Trash – February 2017

I feel like I just did an empties post yet here I am again…I always find these types of posts to be a lot of work and I’m not sure I want to continue doing them, at least in this format.  Another thing to add to my to-do list…

Kat von D Tattoo Liner (Trooper)

This is my second time trying this liner out but the second time was much more successful than the first.  The first time I found this skipped and dragged but this time I had none of those issues whatsoever.  I just found this really easy to work with because the formula isn’t too liquidy or fluid.  I might actually purchase the full size of this once I finish up the liquid liner I’m currently using.

NYX HD Photogenic Concealer

This concealer made my Top 16 of 2016 Disappointing Product list.  It was just way too dry and emphasized (and created) fine lines under my eye area.  I ended up using it as a colour corrector/eyeshadow primer but it didn’t really work well for that purpose either.

Rocky Mountain Soap Company Lip Butter (Rootbeer)

This actually isn’t empty – there’s probably more than 1/2 left but I had to stop using it because it was drying out my lips SO BAD.  I’m not sure what’s in it that caused such a bad reaction but as soon as I stopped using it my lips improved.  Too bad because it actually does smell very much like root beer which is nice.

Stila Huge Extreme Lash Mascara

Lately almost every mascara I try flakes and smudges on me.  This was a pretty wet formula, even after letting it dry out for a bit after opening.  I found it straightened my lashes and made them clump together.  It did lengthen my lashes but I couldn’t get it to thicken them.

CoverGirl Katy Kat Eye Mascara

Another product that made it to my Top 16 of 2016 list – I feel very strongly about this product.  I hated it.  The formula is super wet and mascara clumps in the crevices of the wand.  If you like super straight lashes that stick out like spider legs, this could be for you.

Essence Princess Lash False Lash Effect Mascara

I really wanted to like this mascara and I did at first.  I was quite impressed with it after my first few times trying it – it lengthened, thickened and volumized.  Then it seemed as the formula dried it out it started to flake pretty bad, in addition to smudging a bit.  The flaking got to the point where it was out of control.  As such I included it in my Worst in Beauty for 2016 as well.

Josie Maran Argan Black Oil Mascara

When I first started using this I found it was very similar to Too Faced’s Better than Sex mascara and was very hopeful that it could be a non-flaking dupe for it.  Nope.  It flakes and smudges worse than the TF version unfortunately.  Great volume and thickness though!

Garnier Skin Active All-in-1 Micellar Water
was happily utilizing my second bottle of this micellar water until I read some comments on a Youtube video about how there is an ingredient in it that can cause cancer.  I came across this article which explains it, if you’re interested (it also mentions other products from L’Occitane and L’Oreal that include this ingredient).  I know that there are lots of ingredients in products that claim to cause cancer but the fact that this ingredient is banned in Europe but is still being used here is concerning to me.  As such, I’ve discontinued use of this product and definitely won’t be repurchasing it.

The Body Shop Seaweed Pore Cleansing Exfoliator

I’ve had this exfoliator for a while and I’d use it every once and while but I never really felt like it did anything.  I then decided just to use it up as a body scrub to get rid of it.  There just doesn’t seem to be enough exfoliant in this to be effective.

Neutrogena Rapid Clear Acne Defence Face Lotion

This is an amazing moisturizer if you suffer from acne-prone skin.  Unfortunately it’s not available in Canada – I think because of the high percentage of salicylic acid.  It took my skin a few uses to get used to it as it is quite intense but using it once a day really helped my skin out – it definitely kept my skin clearer than when I didn’t use it.  If I had access to this here in Canada I would snatch it up in a second and make it my regular evening moisturizer.

Clean & Clear Advantage Mark Treatment
If you’re looking for a product to help fade old acne scars or hyper-pigmentation, I’d highly recommend this.  It actually works – which is kind of amazing because it’s from the drugstore and I’ve had higher end products that don’t work at all.

Repurchase?: Yes

Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm

This was my first time trying a cleansing balm and unfortunately I think it’ll be my last.  I just found the process way too complicated and messy – you’re supposed to let this sit on your skin for a while to help it break down your makeup but sometimes I didn’t use enough and would have to dip back into it and I’d end up transferring makeup into the jar and ugh…I’ll just stick with a simple face wash.  It did leave my skin feeling soft and hydrated after though.

Nivea Gentle Cleansing Wipes

Did not enjoy these – another disappointing product for 2016.

Sephora Collection Foot Mask (Almond)

I picked this up way back in September when we were on our road trip and I just used it a few weeks ago.  My feet are in really rough shape right now which is odd because I usually only experience that in the Summer when I’m wearing flip-flops and sandals constantly.  While this seemed to help with making my feet softer and slightly smoother, I think you’d have to use them on a regular basis to see more visible results.  It was definitely relaxing though so it’s a great way to up your at-home pedicure routine!

L’Occitane Almond Exfoliating Scrub

I was on a bit of a L’Occitane kick earlier last year and I treated myself to this exfoliating scrub in a moment of weakness.  I can’t really believe I spent $30 CAD on this – it did the job but is literally no different from any other exfoliator I’ve used but its 3x the price.  It has the signature almond scent that is nice but it’s not worth repurchasing it solely for that.

Repurchase?: No

It’s Skin Cookies & Cream Body Cream

This body cream was so interesting; it smelled divinely of cookies and cream and it actually looked like cookies and cream too – right down to the cookie crumbs that were meant to gently exfoliate skin.  This did leave my skin feeling moisturized immediately after applying it but I didn’t feel like it stuck long.  Plus I went through this tub pretty quick so I don’t see myself repurchasing this.

Philosophy French Vanilla Bean Shampoo, Shower Gel & Bubble Bath

I’ve always found these smell amazing but don’t quite deliver in terms of being a bubble bath – the scent seems to disappear once added to water and they just don’t bubble up like a bubble bath should.   The one concern I do have with this product is the warning on the back of the bottle – it states that excessive use or prolonged exposure can cause irritation to skin and urinary tract infections.   I know that bubble baths can sometimes = urinary tract infections but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a warning on the back of a bottle?  A little concerning.

Bath & Body Works PocketBac Hand Sanitizers (Copacabana Coconut / Pink Chiffon)

I always have one of these in my purse – especially at this time of year when germs are running rampant.  They are great for travel too!

Delectable Supremely Rich Body Wash (Coconut & Cream)

I like a lot of Delectable’s products but there’s a few scents that I’m just not really a fan of – and the Coconut & Cream is one of them.  I just find it smells really synthetic and car air freshener-like.  This is a good body wash though – I just prefer it in the lemon, strawberry or vanilla scents.

Schwarzkopf Essence Ultime Biotin+ Volume Shampoo

This was a pretty good shampoo – I used it in conjunction with the conditioner (which I have yet to finish up – why does that always happen?) and I felt it cleaned my hair well and volumized it sufficiently.  I loved the scent of this – it was perfume-like but in a good way, like I’d love to be able to buy a perfume with this scent.  That said, I probably won’t repurchase it because I like trying out new shampoos all the time.

Repurchase:  Yes but not right now

Paul Mitchell Colorcare Color Protect Daily Shampoo

This is actually a shampoo I have re-purchased which doesn’t happen very often!  I always like having a shampoo for colour-treated hair in my lineup of shampoos and this one seemed to do a good job of protecting my colour while still cleansing my hair.  Because I’ve used two bottles up of this I probably won’t repurchase this for a while – again, I’d like to try something new.

Repurchase?: Yes but not right now

CHI Magnified Volume Finishing Spray

I’m on my second bottle of this too (both this and the shampoo should have been down in the repeats section) and while I think this is a pretty good hair spray, I’ve currently fallen head over heels for Living Proof’s Flex Shaping Hairspray so I think I’m going to repurchase that next (why does it have to be so expensive though?).

Batiste Dry Shampoo x 4

Looks like they’ve finally discontinued the Ella Henderson scent….I can’t find it anywhere anymore.  🙁

LipSmackers Lip Balm (Strawberry Vanilla & Dr. Pepper)

Can’t find my Dr.Pepper Lipsmackers anymore either….life just isn’t going my way lately!

Too Faced Shadow Insurance

My favourite eyeshadow primer.

Neutrogena All-in-One Makeup Remover Wipes

My go-to makeup wipes.

Kirkland Daily Facial Towelettes

I use these solely to remove swatches because they suck for their intended purpose.

Cake Supremely Rich Bath & Shower Froth (It’s a Slice)

I’ve gone through so many of these but this was my first time trying out this scent.  I wasn’t a fan of it – it had an odd spicy orange scent.  Much prefer Milk Made or Strawberries & Cream.

Delectable Ultra Nourishing Hand Cream (Lemon & Cream)

One of my favourite hand creams.

Frilly Lilly Shea Butter Hand Cream (Shea Butter)

A big fan of this hand cream as well, but I much prefer the lemon scent – this one was pretty floral which I’m not a fan of.

Tarte Lights Camera Lashes Mascara

I like this mascara but this tube seemed particularly dry – probably had something to do with how small it was – this was like micro-mini sample.

I’m off to dump all of this into the trash/recycling now.  Thanks for reading!

Loved your mini reviews! So helpful. I’m torn on the Clinique cleansing balm – like you, I find it annoyingly complicated to use. It does work well, though.

Sad about the CG Katy Kat mascara and the root beer lip balm! They sounded nice.

And yes there always seem to be good US-available products, like the Neutrogena lotion, that don’t show up in Canada. Argh!

Well done with so many empties!

    • prettyrufflife says

Aw thanks Chris! Yah I’ve just determined that I like a simple skincare cleansing routine – a good face wash and makeup remover to get off anything I missed. 🙂

I hear you on how much work goes into empties posts! I typically start drafting the post as soon as I have 1 empty product and then add to it every time I have a couple more empties – this helps to break down the effort throughout the month.

Mascaras are so tricky! It looks like you didn’t like any of the recent ones you’ve tried. Out of curiosity, what is your favourite mascara?

That is frightening about the ingredient polyaminopropyl biguanide (PHMB)! How shocking large corporations are getting away with using it?!! 😮 I had a glance at the list of products that article showed, thank goodness I don’t own any of them. BUT, I have definitely used a couple of those products before!

Too bad you don’t like cleansing balms – it’s all personal preference for sure. FYI, I use a metal spoon from the silverware drawer to scoop the balm out (1 teaspoon is perfect for me) and then I wash the spoon each time. 😛

I think I’ve seen that Ella Henderson scent of the Batiste dry shampoo at Winners / Marshalls if you’re set on getting more. 🙂

    • prettyrufflife says

That is such a good idea about how you do empties posts – of course I’d expect nothing less from you! 😉

The only mascara that I’ve liked in the last 6 months has been IT Cosmetics SuperHero – and it’s hard to get here. Everything is smudging and flaking on me lately – it’s beyond frustrating. I need to go to the drugstore and do some mascara shopping I think.

Yes I feel the same way about that ingredient in the Micellar Water – really disappointing and frustrating that it’s still acceptable to use. I’ve used several other products on that list before too!

Oh that’s brilliant idea about the cleansing balm – very smart! 🙂

  3. Janine says

I’m due for an empties post as well but I completely agree with the fact that they are a lot of work! Plus by the time I actually get around to writing it, I’ve forgotten what I liked or disliked about half of the sample size products.

That’s too bad about that micellar water as it’s my favourite! It’s crazy that certain countries ban ingredients while others don’t. I’ll definitely reconsider repurchasing this now!

    • prettyrufflife says

I really liked that Micellar Water too and I was super disappointed when I read that about the ingredients. It feels like you can’t use anything anymore, it’s really frustrating.

Feel the same way about empties….I’m just not sure they’re worth the effort anymore…
